Abstract
In the context of post-Revolutionary America's future-oriented egalitarianism, genealogy was considered to be a suspect, elite activity. The essay studies the crucial role of John Farmer (1789–1838), an amateur historian, in drawing together a group of antiquarians to professionalize and legitimate the practice of genealogy in the new nation.
