Summary

Introduction

The Greater Manchester Law Centre AGM paid tribute to John Clegg, who was a founder member of GMLC. We introduced Ken Loach, Robert Lizar (Moss Side human rights legal aid lawyer), Maxine Peake (our very own QC as seen on TV), and local lawyers George Brown and Craig Holmes, as well as the indefatigable Denise McDowell, rightly acclaimed manager of the Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit, whose support for the development and continuation of the law centre has been invaluable. Ken drew attention to the importance of getting people together at a time when the leadership of the official (very loyal) ‘opposition’ is inadequate – and praised the breadth and depth of a campaign rooted in local communities while taking up wider struggles linking all those fighting against oppression.
