Abstract
Neither John Brown nor his principal antagonist, Governor Henry A. Wise of Virginia, was altogether comfortable in his role. The accusatory historiography of the conservatives, the heroic literature of the radicals, and the vague, lukewarm pieties of the liberals are all dismissed in favor of an approach relating inner drama to external action through a contrastive study.
