John Benjamin Murphy Chicago Surgeon

Abstract

To the Editor:— Your interesting article on John Murphy, 1857-1916, Chicago surgeon, invites the following comments: Murphy was never known in Chicago as John Murphy. Mostly he was known as J.B. or John Benjamin Murphy. He designated himself as J.B. Murphy in all the articles noted in your bibliography. Your statement, no one carried on his work after he died is not exactly true. His son-in-law, John Golden, a talented surgeon, succeeded him; and he left many excellent pupils in Chicago who were first class surgeons. Finally, you omit noting that when Theodore Roosevelt was shot by an assassin in Milwaukee, he was brought by special train to Mercy Hospital in Chicago where John Benjamin Murphy treated his wound.
