Abstract

Using a mixture of semi-structured tape-recorded interviews and postal questionnaires, this article examines aspects of the employment of club doctors and physiotherapists in English professional football clubs, with particular emphasis on the methods of appointment, experience and qualifications of club medical staff. It is argued that the process of appointing club doctors and physiotherapists constitutes a catalogue of poor employment practice. Methods of appointment are very informal; medical posts are hardly ever publicly advertised and many doctors and physiotherapists are appointed on the basis of personal contacts, often without interview; few doctors have prior experience of or qualifications in sports medicine and half of all physiotherapists do not have chartered status.
