Abstract

This study compared job satisfaction in staff working in community nursing development units (NDUs) with staff working in hospital NDUs. The data were drawn from a questionnaire survey of all staff in 28 NDUs awarded pump-priming funds by the Department of Health. Eight were community NDUs (n=142) and 20 (n=657) were hospital NDUs. Response rates were 77% and 70% respectively. Levels of satisfaction were not high for either group but community staff were significantly less satisfied than hospital staff with many issues including staffing, resources, continuing education and professional development. The effects of change in workforce configuration and nurse morale on standards of care and patient outcome are considered.
