Abstract

The road with its geographic, intellectual, and temporal declinations plays a key role in the fictional world of J.M.G. Le Clézio. It is, in a sense, a mediation operator. Thanks to the road, we may change our way of life. Thus to define what a road is, means to examine its use; it does imply not only travels, but also exile and errantry. The movement, as a poetic principle that frames the writer's works, hints also at the general crisis of meaning. In his books, the writer suggests the rising assertion of a prevailing principle of uncertainty, by the transition from a sedentary imagination to a nomadic dream. In this perspective, I will analyze several exile and errantry specifics, such as the relation with space, the choice of original temporal forms, and the discover of harmony, which finally allows the access to the splendid beauty of freedom.
