Abstract
This chapter begins with a discussion on the link between Jewish identity and anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism is sometimes undisguised and raw but it is often associated with social and political relationships in which Jews are participants. Accepting the recognition of this fact is an invitation for Jews to consider these links and relationships and not to isolate themselves by refusing any discussion of, or challenge to, their own ideas. The chapter discusses the context of Jewish identity in France today. On the whole, until the 1960s, Jews in France conformed to the Republican model: in the public sphere, they were individuals with the same rights and duties as others; they were Jewish only in the private sphere. Since the end of the 1960s, the break of the Jews in France with the most classical Republican model has made of them actors who have an influence on the feelings which they arouse.
