Abstract
This chapter begins with a broad survey of Jewish demonology and exorcism in the Second Temple period, based on two recent studies that cover all the primary sources. Then it examines Jewish demonology and exorcism in the post-Destruction period, in an attempt to find continuities, discontinuities, and innovations in comparison with the earlier period, and to assess their relative significance. The chapter discusses some broader conclusions on the impact of the Destruction on the Jewish handling of demons-or on the lack thereof. It discusses three different types of exorcism practiced by Jews at the time: exorcism through the use of naturally exorcistic substances; exorcism by means of prayers and adjurations; and exorcism performed by holy men by means of their innate powers. The author summarizes what is currently known about the application of each of these techniques in the Second Temple period. Keywords:adjurations; demonology; Jewish Exorcism; Second Temple period
