Abstract

In the January 2001 issue we reported on a novel development in the manufacture of alternatives to asbestos sealing products, namely a ‘Triple Alliance’ which led to an award-winning development in the world of water jet-cutting technology. Three UK-based engineering companies have brought to commercial fruition a new system which has great potential for a wide variety of applications, not the least being the manufacture of seals and gaskets made from robust materials such as graphite. However, that article — Water-jet cutting machine offers accurate ‘green’ gasket cutting — elicited responses from other companies active in the field. This has led us to return to the topic with a more general overview of this advanced manufacturing process. In this article we look at the world's biggest market for sealing product — North America — where a growing number of service companies are augmenting their existing cutting processes with water-jet machines.
