Abstract

Jesus as an ideal, as a figure in history, is a person whom many Europeans will identify with as a part of their history and culture. Works of art is a typical example, in European figurative art Jesus has as a matter of fact been portrayed as a European. German universities and German scholars dominated the development of the modern, historical-critical Bible study and Jesus research in the 19th century. This development in the academic world happened at the same time and was partly a parallel movement to the development of German nationalism and the unification process in (Northern) Germany. The establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 may have contributed to a change in Western attitude towards Jews in general. David Flusser shares the view that belief in God's justice, that rewards the just and punishes the unjust, is an important part of Jewish religion. Keywords: German nationalism; Israel; Jesus; Jewish religion
