Abstract
Jesus as an ideal, as a figure in history, is a person whom many Europeans will identify with as a part of their history and culture. Works of art is a typical example, in European figurative art Jesus has as a matter of fact been portrayed as a European. German universities and German scholars dominated the development of the modern, historical-critical Bible study and Jesus research in the 19th century. This development in the academic world happened at the same time and was partly a parallel movement to the development of German nationalism and the unification process in (Northern) Germany. The establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 may have contributed to a change in Western attitude towards Jews in general.
