Abstract

This chapter examines two leading Nazi newspapers, Der Sturmer ( DS ), edited by Julius Streicher, and Das Schwarzes Korps ( DSK ), and published by SS leadership. Both DS and DSK asserted that Jesuits in particular were a harmful and threatening presence in Catholicism. Most of revelations include familiar imagery that Jesuits are militant, cunning, greedy, lascivious masters of disguise working with Devil to promote Catholicism in Nazi Germany. Although Spanish Civil War sharply divided individuals within nations, in Nazi propaganda story of war was portrayed consistently as a necessary battle for protection of Christianity and Western civilization. Falsely attributing motto of the ends justifies means to Jesuit order and claiming that Jesuits were out to conquer world allowed Nazi propagandists to connect Jesuits to Jews and ultimately to Devil. Keywords: Catholicism; Christianity; Das Schwarzes Korps ( DSK ); Der Sturmer ( DS ); Jesuits; Jews; Nazi Germany; Spanish Civil War
