Abstract

Jerusalem's Jesus is within every character and creature (including Blake's readers) — and he contains us all. Like his consort Jerusalem, he brings and embodies forgiveness; like her Blake's Jesus is a context (the body where we live) and a way of being (the love through which we create and relate) — as well as a multifaceted incarnate character. He is creative, erotic, fiery, and kind. This chapter discusses how Jesus appears and functions in Jerusalem and how biblical, theological and poetic sources — the Gospels, Pauline epistles, the Moravian Church, Swedenborg, Boehme, Milton and Edward Young's Night Thoughts – help to illuminate his character.
