Abstract

The period between the reign of Uzziah, king of Judah, in the mid 8th century B. C. E., and the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile at the beginning of the 6th century is depicted in numerous biblical sources as a time of renaissance in the city of Jerusalem, which served as the capital of Israel from the days of David and Solomon. Jerusalem, during this period, was the metropolis of Judah and the focus of the religious and national aspirations of the Israelite people, which were poignantly expressed in the prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah. Turning to Hezekiah's activities in Jerusalem, one can observe major improvements and changes. As a result of the many archaeological excavations in Jerusalem, a single generation of scholars, starting with the late Dame Kathleen Kenyon, has been able to open new avenues for reconstructing the history of Jerusalem in biblical times. Keywords: archaeological excavations; Isaiah; Jeremiah; Jerusalem; national aspirations; religious aspirations
