Abstract

Jean-Louis Barrault remains undervalued among academic drama critics. He still has the reputation of somebody who does not spend enough time on his productions, whose work remains confined to the register of light entertainment and tends to flatter the middle class taste of his public. TheVie parisienne is a good example of one of those succesfull play that he has always produced alongside major titles from he repertory. A close analysis of J.-L. Barrault's archives at the Arsenal Library reveals the amount of work required by this challenging production in wich J.-L. Barrault tried to adopt the rythm of an american musical whilst enpowering the protagonists with a human and poetic dimension.
