Abstract

Henri Dunant was born on the 8th of May 1828 in Geneva as first son of the merchant Jean-Jacques Dunant and his wife Antoinette Dunant-Colladon (Figure 1). The family followed the pietistic Calvinistic faith, which explains the humanistic life Dunant led. His many socially motivated activities may be highlighted by the foundation of the worldwide YMCA movement in 1855. His professional formation was as a bank clerk in the private bank of Lullin and Sautter in Geneva.
