Abstract

Melusine is the first full-length romance based on the ancient legend of the serpent faery—the mermaid or sea-nymph of Hebrew, Greek, and Indian mythology. This prose tale was written about 1365 by Jean d’Arras, secretary to the sovereign Duke of Berri, son of King John II of France. Supposedly based on an old manuscript found in the royal archives, the romance was intended to entertain the Duke’s sister Mary, Countess of Bar, and to chronicle the fabled rise of the Poitiers family of Lusignan, the sovereign Counts of Foret or Forest, relatives of the French royal family.
