Abstract
Francis Richard : J.-B. Gentil, a collector of Persian manuscripts. After living in Faizabad in northern India for twelve years, Jean-Baptiste Gentil (1726-99) had by 1775 assembled for Anquetil-Duperron and the King a great collection of objects, paintings and coins. Their aim was to study Indian history with a view to restoring French power in India. An analysis of the list of manuscripts that he collected shows that he wished above all to be a historian.
