Abstract

This essay purports to present a parallel between Ahab's course toward the final catastrophe and the craving of the Catholic mystics for an ecstatic transport in the ultimate union with God. Grounded on a close analysis of Melville's text and on the writings of some mystics, this reading o/Moby-Dick, as eccenteric as the parallel may first seem, also allows to account for the dynamics of the Ahab-Ishmael relation.
