Abstract
Significance The centre-left main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party supported the prime minister’s 'stakeholder capitalism' approach. The government's plan seeks to ensure equal pay for equal work; however, past efforts to reduce disparities have foundered on broad support for the present system. Impacts Kishida's still solid approval ratings, despite the lukewarm reception of his proposals, suggest that he still has time to flesh them out. Addressing inequality between genders and regular/non-regular workers will be crucial, as previous leaders have diagnosed but not addressed. Two early policies involve tasking competition authorities with preventing large firms from 'abusing their superior bargaining position'.
