Abstract

The lack of cross-cultural and cross-national consideration is a major flaw in the recent critique of modernism. Japanese modernism portrayed through the satirical mode is the off spring of war, a graphic literary reaction against the confines of national hegemonic discourse that enabled a critique of the sociopolitical transition from Meiji to Taishō Japan and beyond. Tokyo Puck's originality lay in its indiscriminate criticism of all aspects of Japan's modernizing society.
