Japanese File Index classification and F-terms

Abstract

Two distinctive and useful features of Japanese patent documentation are the file index (FI) and F-term classification systems developed by the Japan Patent Office. Since April 2001, it has been possible to search Japanese patent literature with FI classification and F-terms in English. This article explains the concept, structure and layout of these two special classification systems, as well as providing pointers to further guidance and the use of these features to enhance searches of Japanese patent documentation.
