Abstract

THE GUIDELINES for the development of Japan's postwar SelfDefense Forces (SDF) were set forth in the Basic Policies for National Defense, published in May 1957. The main objective of Japan's defense policy is to prevent direct and indirect aggression, and if invaded, to repel aggression. The means to achieve this objective include support of the United Nations, the establishment of a sound domestic basis for security by stabilizing the public welfare and enhancing love of country, the development of the capabilities necessary for self-defense, and reliance on US-Japan security arrangements to deal with external aggression.
