Abstract

A second delegation of Japanese chemists and engineers seeking a dialogue on C 1 chemistry has just finished a tour of major U.S. chemical companies. The first delegation made the rounds a year ago (C&EN, June 8, page 23) and revealed for the first time the Japanese interest in what amounts to a crash development program for C 1 -based chemicals production by 1986. The delegation spent two weeks recently visiting at Exxon Research & Engineering, Mobil Research & Development, Eastman Kodak, Gulf Research & Development, Dow Chemical, Union Carbide, Monsanto, Texaco Chemicals, and the University of California, Berkeley. A sampling of opinion from U.S. company representatives suggests that the Japanese delegations have not received the assistance they sought. The second Japanese delegation was under the leadership of Mitsuo Yamaguchi, managing director of Mitsubishi Chemical Industries.
