Abstract

Abstract Some pharmacological and clinical studies suggest that Juzentaihoto (JTT), one of the Japanese botanical medicines, has the effects of anti-tumour and immunological restoration in patients. These are related with natural killer T (NKT) cell function and might be induced by interleukin (IL)-12 and IL-18. These are reported to be the key molecules of induction and activation of NKT cells. Long administration of JTT induced up-regulation of serum IL-18 levels of the treated patients. IL-12 was also expressed abundantly in the livers of JTT-treated mice. We indicate here that JTT, one of the Japanese botanical medicines, may be useful for treatment of patients with liver and gastrointestinal tumours without producing severe adverse effects.
