Abstract

Abstract The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of how insight in schizophrenia has been understood and discussed in Japanese psychiatry. The chapter is divided into four sections. In the first, I will briefly review the significance of this issue in the development of modern Japanese psychiatry, for the benefit of readers who are not familiar with the history of psychiatry in Japan. The second and third sections deal with selected theoretical debates and clinical practices concerning this issue. The last section outlines some evidence-based Japanese studies and representative attitudes of Japanese psychiatrists toward this matter.
