Abstract

Three years on from the dramatic election that saw the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) swept aside by the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), and three prime ministers later, Japanese politics remain deeply volatile. The emergence of new political actors has caused some excitement among an electorate that has grown weary of the established parties. But elections expected later this year are unlikely to end the current period of instability.
