Abstract

AbstractA collaborative study was made of two methods for determining the total oil content of sunflower seed. The seed of three sunflower varieties of low, medium, and high oil content were analyzed on different days by 12 collaborators. In one method, the sunflower seeds were ground with an equivalent wt of diatomaceous earth. In the second method, the seeds were ground with a high‐speed grinder without diatomaceous earth. The method using diatomaceous earth in the grinding of the seed gave a significantly higher oil content for all three varieties. It was recommended that total oil on a per cent dry wt basis be calculated from the moisture determination of the whole seed and not from the moisture of ground sample, which was too variable.
