Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper illustrates how racial dynamics emerge through clinical and professional enactments and contribute to the social construction of race in psychoanalytic settings. The author defines societal racial introjects as introjects with a racial valance stemming from societal objects or entities. Societal racial introjects impinge on intrapsychic processes and shape racial expression in the self for both patient and analyst. The intersection of societal introjection and the social construction of race is demonstrated through an analysis of transference and countertransference phenomena between patient and analyst following the 2016 United States Election.
