Abstract

The La Grande Complex, in the James Bay region of Quebec, requires the construction of seven major spillways and two control structures. Spillway design discharges vary from 120 000 ft3/s (3400 m3/s) to 575 000 ft3/s (16280 m3/s). All structures are equipped with fixed wheel gates. The design of the gate structures of all the spillways has been standardized as much as possible, but the water conveyances downstream vary greatly, depending on the peculiarities of the individual sites. Structural rather than hydraulic design is emphasized in the study. The layouts adopted for all the facilities are presented and the bases of design for both the concrete sub-structures and steel super-structures are discussed. The loads, and load combinations, used for stability analyses and detailed design of structural elements are also given.
