Abstract

We developed a knowledge-based engineering system for piston design that enables the effective use of design knowledge and tools. The system has four main features: (1) knowledge database that enables systematic organization of design knowledge and tools, (2) a design navigator that guides the piston design/analysis procedures and supports use of design tools, (3) a project management support tool that shows the progress and status of piston design projects, and (4) a web-based design portal through which designers access subsystems of above (1), (2) and (3). The present system is contributing to improvements in design reliability and reductions in design cycle time.
