Abstract
The solar sail is one of the examples of large deployable space membrane structures as Gossamer spacecraft. The structural characteristics are significant to examine the deployment configuration, vibrational and dynamic properties of the membrane structures. The initial deformation on the membrane due to creases and wrinkles is not negligible for evaluating the mechanical properties because its magnitude is very large with respect to the membrane thickness. This paper investigates the effects of relatively large initial deformation of membrane under the assumption that the initial deformations are random with a bandwidth for wavelength. Finally, the stiffness of the membrane can be evaluated the non-dimensional initial deformation of the membrane.
