Abstract

A novel surface modification technique, which combine In-situ tribo-coating lubrication by using solid lubricant and Laser Surface Texturing techniques, is proposed. LST was performed on the Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy disks and dimples with diameter of 100 μm were fabricated on their surfaces. The tribological properties of textured surface combined with solid lubricant were investigated using a cylinder-disk SRV tester both under the lubricating PAO oil and the non-lubrication condition. The results show that the cooperation of solid lubricant with LST is effective at reducing both the COF and wear of titanium alloy. A lower coefficient of friction and a lower abrasion both on mating cylinder and disks are obtained on all the treated disks regardless of any test conditions. It is shown that low fi'iction and long wear life of treated surfaces is apparently provided by preservation of solid lubricant around the dimples and by supply of solid lubricant from the dimples to the interface in terms of the non-lubrication test condition.
