Abstract

It is essential to estimate accurately the critical wind velocity of overturning for role and stable trains operation. In this research, we examine the effect of aerodynamic coefficients on the critical wind velocity of overturning of the railway vehicle running on embankments. We compared the critical wind velocity of overturning estimated from aerodynamic coefficients obtained by the experiment in the Maibara large scale low noise wind tunnel with that calculated by the DB technique. The results of this study show that the DB technique is able to estimate the critical wind velocity of overturning approximately similar to the present study but that is not same as at all. Accordingly the wind tunnel experiments are necessary to estimate the aerodynamic coefficients more precisely.
