Abstract

Recently, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flows in electrolyte solutions have been observed and applied to micropumps. However, conventional EHD flows require to be applied at least several tens volts of electric potentials. A main purpose of this study is to develop a novel device which generates an EHD flow by the lower applied voltages inaqueous solutions. In the experimental system, current paths of cation and anion can be separated by using ion-exchange membranes with a pore. Both electrical and optical observations are carried out focusing on liquid flows in the pore. Consequently, EHD flows of several mm/s are observed by applying an electric potential of 2.2 V.
