Abstract

We have developed the molecular beam source with non-diaphragm type small shock tube and evaluate the beam characteristics by the time-of-flight (TOF) method. We measured TOF distributions of the molecular beam of nitrogen. The shock tube with optimized geometry can generate the molecular beam with the translational energy of more than 1 eV at the repetition rate of 0.5 Hz. The translational energy of the beams is controlled by the initial pressure ratio. The beam source can also generate dissociated atomic oxygen beam with the fraction of dissociation controlled by the initial pressure ratio. These results demonstrate that our beam source is a promising tool for scattering experiments and surface reaction studies.
