Abstract
In this paper, we developed a resonance measurement system for plant leaves. Square shaped specimens (10 mm×10 mm) were cut off from Pothos leaves and their in-plane elastic moduli were measured. Half part of specimens are clamped and resonance oscillations of the remaining free part of the specimens were excited by a piezoelectric actuator and detected by a laser displacement sensor. We observed resonance frequency of leaf specimens related to their vein and calculated their in-plane elastic moduli using the finite element method. In-plane elastic modulus parallel and perpendicular to vein are E_<//>= 62.2±5.6 MPa and E_⊥= 42.7±1.3 MPa, respectively, and the anisotoropy parameter is E_<//>/E_⊥=1.46±0.14.
