Abstract

In the present study, a finite element model including rib bones and intercostal muscles was constructed to investigate the influence of rib cage deformation on the mechanical environment of internal organ. The transversely isotropic hyperelastic material model with active strain energy function was introduced to the intercostal muscles. The finite element analysis of the rib cage deformation caused by contraction of intercostal muscles was carried out. The results show that the contraction of the internal intercostal muscles has the effect of pulling down the rib and, on the other hand, the contraction of the external intercostal muscles affects the rib cage deformation by lifting the rib. The availability of the proposed approach was verified by the agreement between the simulation result and the clinical observation.
