Abstract

Eyelid tumors and their treatment are of interest for many of us including plastic, ophthalmic and oculoplastic surgeons as well as dermatologists that are involved with cutaneous surgery. With their varied training traditions and priorities, each individual specialty carries its characteristics in understanding and approaches to these disorders. Therefore there is no need to tell how important to get the information from different perspectives to widen up our armamentarium. This book of Dr Older who is trained in ophthalmic and oculoplastic surgery contains 11 chapters under two sections. The first section entitled “Diagnosis and Management” summarizes briefly the differential diagnosis of eyelid tumors, malignant and benign tumors with their related conditions, their histopathological features and finally their treatment under five sub-sections. The second section, “Reconstruction of the Eyelids,” starts with the basic but essential knowledge of surgical anatomy and then describes the principles of reconstruction of the lower and upper eyelid as well as medial and lateral canthi. Throughout the book there are 394 color illustrations consisting of actual patient photos and drawings, explaining the anatomy and the surgical procedures that are described. The high amount of colorful visual content has a great impact not only on the readers’ interest but also digestion of the information that is provided. Any physician who is involved with eyelid lesions should have a reference book that contains the vital knowledge covering both the diagnosis and the methods of treatment so that he or she can easily refer to when such expertise is needed. I believe this valuable presentation of Dr Older with its enriched second edition certainly fulfills this goal by covering most of the aspects of the subject with a reader friendly style.
