Abstract

The paper looks at the publishing activities of the Pedagogical Society of Serbia in order to provide an overview of their development, range, relationship to the socio-political context and position in the field of pedagogical theory and practice. It uses a chronological-thematic approach and analyzes published and unpublished sources. Since its founding in 1924, there has been awareness within the Pedagogical Society of the importance of publishing for the achievement of its goals. Despite failing to launch its own publishing in the pre-war period (1924-1938), after World War II it was much more successful in this area, particularly in the period 1951-1961 which saw the launching of the journals Nastava i vaspitanje and Pedagoska stvarnost, as well as several series of pedagogical publications comprising 24 volumes. After this period, due to financial difficulties, the Pedagogical Society's publishing output was reduced to journals and their special issues. In the 1980s the volume of the Society's publishing activities increased once again, and continued to expand throughout the 1990s despite the general political and social crisis. Since 1992 more than twenty volumes aimed at different target audiences have been published. As of the year 2000, the Society's publishing capabilities have been additionally expanded thanks to the setting up of a Web site, enabling open access to the journal Nastava i vaspitanje and the electronic publication of papers. The paper concludes with the view that the Pedagogical Society's publications are an important historical source for the study not only of pedagogical issues, but also of questions of educational policy and educational reform.
