Abstract
Let K be a CM field with K + its maximal real subfield. Let λ, λ + be the Iwasawa λ-invariants for the cyclotomic Z p -extension of K, K +, respectively. We set λ − = λ − λ +. We show that under certain conditions, λ + ≤ λ − − 1. We use this inequality to give criteria which imply that λ + = 0.
