Abstract

Few ivories can be ‘localized’ or reveal histories of ownership. This article shows how archaeological discoveries can provide specific information on context, and describes as a case study a little known corpus of ivories from Wales, some previously unpublished, and their contexts. These include a ‘lost’ diptych associated with Valle Crucis Abbey, Denbighshire; a ‘Presentation at the Temple’ plaque found at Dolforwyn Castle, Montgomeryshire; and a plaque discovered at Basingwerk Abbey, Flintshire. The afterlife of a recently married pair of diptych leaves in the collections of National Museums Liverpool and Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales, and the application of laser scanning to replicate a panel, are described.
