Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the synthesis of optical birefringent networks. Lyot and Solc filters are special arrangements of birefringent crystals and polarizers, which produce particular transmission characteristics. Numerous modifications and improvements had been made on Solc and Lyot filters, as their invention did not allow one to arbitrarily shape the transmittance of the filters. Thus, the use of birefringent devices produce other types of characteristics awaited the development of general synthesis procedures. The basic “building blocks” of birefringent networks are polarizers, birefringent crystals, and optical compensators. The polarizers are standard optical polarizers. The birefringent crystals may be either uniaxial or biaxial. Optical compensators behave essentially the same as very short birefringent crystals.
