Abstract

A major source of dissatisfaction associated with burn wound care is the amount of pain experienced during the procedure. After reviewing pain scores of burn patients, verbal feedback from patients and wound care clinicians, we decided to implement a process change using deep sedation as a means of providing comfort during daily wound care. Burn patients admitted to the burn step-down units were taken to the Outpatient Diagnostic area where an anesthesia practitioner administered deep sedation. This level of sedation allowed the wound nurse to aggressively scrub the area, which facilitates a more thorough debridement than could be accomplished at the bedside. Burn size, pain score (scale 0–10), mechanism of injury and length of stay were determined for the study group.
