Abstract

The 20th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) met in Vienna in August for the first time since the 1987 meeting in Vancouver. About 5,000 geophysicists from at least 39 countries attended, including an estimated 800–1,000 from the United States. The IUGG is comprised of seven associations covering different disciplines, rather like the sections of AGU. These associations resemble feudal baronies bound loosely in a federation. Attendance varied greatly from one association to another; this was reflected in the strength of their scientific programs at the meeting.
