Abstract

Objectives: For many women, the year after delivery is a high-risk time for unintended pregnancy. Although many women desire long-acting contraception such as an intrauterine device (IUD), postpartum contraception plans and actual use vary significantly. A significant number of women who plan for an IUD at the postpartum visit do not present for the visit or have already experienced unintended pregnancy. Immediate postplacental IUD at the time of cesarean is safe and effective, though not widely practiced in the United States. We aim to estimate the costs and clinical outcomes of immediate postplacental IUD insertion at cesarean delivery versus insertion at the postpartum visit.
