Abstract

An IUD was used in the prevention of recurring uterine synechiae. The adhesions were removed by the vaginal route in 8 patients 7 of whom were amenorrheic for 5 months to 3 years and a Margulies coil IUD was i nserted. The patency of the uterine cavity is sustained by the presence of the device. It is concluded that the Margulies coil prevents the recurrence of uterine synechiae and adhesions on the cervical os by occupying a large portion of the uterine cavity by the protrustion of the tail in the cervix and by stimulating secretion of the endometrial glands. Follow-up examinations between 6 and 12 months after the procedure showed no return of synechiae and all the women returned to no rmal menstruation patterns.
