Abstract
We are facing a shortage of surgeons in the U.S. as demand increases and the number of medical students entering surgery remains the same. Studies have demonstrated that many desire to leave surgery due to increasing demands on time, leading to frequent reports of ‘burnout’.1 “I need to have a fulfilling job”: A Qualitative Study of Surgeon Well-being and Professional Fulfillment,2 published in this special issue of the American Journal of Surgery describes a multi-level conceptual model which highlights several key factors important to surgeons' professional well-being.
