Abstract

This article examines the doubtful status of the Boy in as a 'character', and relates this to questions of the reduction of character as representation, the idea of being on stage as 'presence', and the relation of stage space to an off-stage. Exploring what it means for the Boy to be a child, seen as something secondary and dependent, will shed some light on these classic questions of criticism of Beckett's theatre.
