Abstract

There are certain phrases that are central to academic movements, as if the label held power over our collective imagination. They act as shorthand for ongoing (and past) paradigms, like artistic movements such as surrealism and constructivism, or architecture styles such as “art deco.” In the physical sciences, the early 2000s was dominated by all things “nano” and “nanotechnology,” and perhaps now we are in the “machine learning” or “artificial intelligence” era. The current global socioeconomic state has necessitated another paradigm for research, with perhaps the highest reaching aims: convergency.
